MARTA
Resolving nested bus and pedestrian traffic is essential if a major redevelopment at the MARTA Dunwoody station in Northern Atlanta is to occur. RELM, in collaboration HR&A Advisors, Perimeter Atlanta, and Atlanta’s transit agency, studied the station and its surrounding neighborhood, investigating the feasibly of turning the transit hub into a civic-centered, mixed-use development. Our studio was charged with creating a compelling open space program to support such use. By resolving circulation into and around the site, we transformed a vehicular-focused transit plaza into an expansive public open space flexible to support year-round programming. Additionally, we re-envisioned a storm event spillway into a terraced greenspace, accessible to the surrounding neighborhood.
RETHINKING CIRCULATION TO SUPPORT DENSITY
Current right of way traffic for bus and fire prohibits an accessible approach to the project, much less for future density. RELM had to resolve site circulation to create an occupiable ground plane.
AN EXPANDED PUBLIC REALM
RELM’s landscape creates two significant open spaces – a public plaza that is programmed seasonally throughout the year and a neighborhood park, once a storm water spillway. Together, they support a gradient of activity for residents, hotel guests, visitors, and transit goers alike.
