DAYCARE
FACILITY
Sacramento, CA
Client: California Department of General Services
A companion project to the Natural Resources Agency Headquarters also designed by RELM, the daycare’s landscape abstracts the region’s delta terrain into a series of experiential vignettes. Programming ranges in scale and complexity to accommodate activity levels for different ages—from story time to climbing—aimed to foster confidence and team building skills. Reclaimed wood is central to RELM’s furnishings palette. It tastefully integrates the urban playscape into the surrounding downtown neighborhood.
URBAN BY NATURE
The childcare facility is part of Sacramento’s downtown cityscape. As such, the design needed to be tastefully urban while still providing as sense of enclosure, wonder, and folly. The site is a rooftop, 1/2 level up, surrounded by a vibrant tree canopy that allowed us to create a fully immersive urban playscape.
RECLAIMING AND REPURPOSING
RELM worked with Millwood Furnishings to reclaim and repurpose timber salvaged from barns and Redwood trees victim of the Paradise fire to create signature climbing structures for different ages.
