MIDTOWN AT
WAKE FOREST
UNIVERSITY
Winston-Salem, NC
Client: Camden Securities Company and Shamrock Realty
Wake Forest’s Midtown Development seeks to co-locate sports, entertainment, and hospitality with multi-family and open space to create a compelling sports and entertainment district. Strategically located between the university’s main Reynolda campus and downtown Winston-Salem, the design team conceived how to bolster game day activities, provide central gathering spaces throughout the district, and create a true pedestrian main street flanked by immersive canopy and retail. The entirety of Midtown leverages urban nature to foster identity, resiliency, and activation.
TOWN AND GOWN MEETS MIDTOWN
The catalytic value of Midtown’s 83-acre development offers is threefold: it bolsters the relationship between Wake Forest’s marquee athletic complexes, Trust Field and LJVM Coliseum, elevating game day activity. It renders a meaningful 24/7 university village to Wake Forest’s main campus and thirdly, draws consistent footfall and patronage from downtown Winston Salem. Deacon Boulevard, paired with Deacon Promenade, a new tree-covered axial spine, anchor housing, hospitality, retail, and open space as the district’s primary armature.
HEIGHTENED FAN EXPERIENCE
Game Day experience is critical to the vision of Midtown. Creating spaces and programmed activities for students and alumni to tailgate, congregate, and celebrate led to the creation of Stadium and Hotel Plazas. Both act as an important economic generator, bolstering footfall for local retail and hospitality.
24/7 Coummunity
Open space is central to creating a compelling University Village beyond gameday. A new community park and gardens anchor Midtown’s residential life. Importantly, the park connects to the University’s larger forested spine.
