Long Beach, CA
Client: City of Long Beach
Poor health outcomes and conflicting land-uses prompted the City of Long Beach to apply for an Environmental Justice Grant in 2013. RELM led a design team in conducting a feasibility study looking to decommission a one-mile segment of the Terminal Island Freeway in West Long Beach where residents experience some of the highest rates of asthma in all LA County due to heavy industry, environmental pollution, and lack of open space.
COMMUNITY-DRIVEN DESIGN RESPONSE
An extensive series of workshops and stakeholder engagements were undertaken by the design team to understand the challenges, needs, and ambitions of the West Long Beach Neighborhood residents. The greatest success of master plan effort was documenting the community’s desires into an actionable plan.
