Occupying an entire city block at a celebrated address, 8850 Sunset Boulevard is a mixed-use project consisting of a luxury hotel with branded residences above retail and a re-envisioned Viper Room. An inward-facing public gathering space was created by punching a hole through the building’s ground-floor architecture to create a unique public realm along the Strip. The verdant courtyard anchors an extensive vertical garden that climbs the building’s perimeter, culminating in extensive gardened terraces with panoramic views of the City and the Hollywood Hills.

A BOULEVARD KNOWN FOR FRONTAGES, NOT GATHERING SPACE
Though iconic in stature, Sunset Boulevard has a scarcity of public open space. RELM encouraged the design team to pierce through the architectural façade to create an immersive public garden that is fully accessible. Residents, visitors, and community members alike collide in the space.

IMMERSIVE ECOLOGIES
By densely stacking habitat terraces, RELM is able to create a habitat ‘ladder’ offering a sequence of unique pollinator-friendly gardens that invite a spectrum of native ecologies to take residence onsite.

PUBLIC EDUCATION
An interactive signage system allows visitors to intimately explore the garden habitats through interpretive totems and an interactive app detailing the plant species, their relationship with local fauna and pollinators, and virtual tours of the ecosystems beneath the soil.
