LAX, the fourth-busiest airport in the world, is undergoing a $14 billion renovation to relieve congestion and enhance visitor experience. RELM is designing one of the airport's key infrastructure improvements, a 73-acre landscape for the Consolidated Car Rental Facility (ConRAC). The project abuts La Cienega Boulevard and the 405 freeway and is the eastern terminus of the LAX Gateway. As such, much care is given to its design. It will be the first and last moments drivers experience LA’s dynamic urban form. ConRAC connects to the tram taking passengers into the terminal area at APM Plaza. There, trees, plantings,
benches, lighting, and shade structures create an inviting environment where visitors can enjoy the outdoors between travel segments. From this elevated plaza, views of LAX’s iconic Theme Building can be seen along with LA’s infamous sunsets. The landscape is meant to amplify reverie for the City of Angels.
