Melendrez was recently selected by Crescent Heights to be the Landscape Architect for a new 77-story residential tower in Chicago, Illinois. Located at the South end of historic Grant Park, Melendrez is collaborating with Rafael Vinoly Architects PC and Rockwell Group on this iconic new highrise around which a series of twelve garden spaces spiral and ascend from the 16th floor up to the 76th!

After completing a Bachelor of Urban Planning at Huazhong University of Science and Technology in 2011, and a Masters of Landscape Architect at Louisiana State Univeristy in 2014, Ju initiated her career in the Pacific Northwest working on a range of projects including museuma, academic campuses, a civic park, and urban streets.  Joining the Melendrez studio in March of 2016, Ju is inspired by elegant aesthetics and the sensitive awareness balance of environment and urban context, bringing a

Construction on Forest City's Blossom Plaza has been completed and it is now open to the public. Built entirely over subterranean parking, Blossom Plaza is a mixed use development comprised of three distinct exterior spaces: the Retail Walk, the Fountain Square, and the Courtyard. The Retail Walk and the Courtyard both draw influence from traditional Shanghai residential alleys or Longtangs.

As a proponent of sustainable solutions for the built environment, Meléndrez is excited to host this talk about greywater applications; a key tool in responsibly using water resources.

The recently opened Eighth and Grand by developers Carmel Partners was awarded Project of the Year at the Downtown News’ Downtowners of Distinction Awards. Meléndrez is proud to have been part of the team that brought this important project to Downtown Los Angeles. The development energizes Grand Avenue, Olive and 8th Streets, with an expanded public realm and the addition of the much sought after Whole Foods Market.

The 10000 Santa Monica construction team celebrated completion the final floor of the 40-story residential tower in Century City. To commemorate the event, Meléndrez joined more than 400 people who were on hand to sign one of the project’s steel beams before being placed.

Construction on USC University Village reached a halfway mark last week. The 15-acre project, set to open in fall 2017, marks the largest development the university has undertaken. The milestone was marked with the installation of a 12,700-pound rooftop spire on one of the buildings.

The Meléndrez studio walked the nearly completed Blossom Plaza in Chinatown. Project Manager Marc Delouvrier, Lead Designer Tony Lopez, and Principal Scott Baker, led the office through the site to explain design concepts, discuss constructability issues, and review lessons learned.

Check out the final project of one of the newest additions to the Meléndrez team, Alex Jung, who recently graduated from UCLA with a Masters in Urban and Regional Planning.  The project is a digital how-to manual on how to host a ‘pop-up’ public health event.

Meléndrez’s urban design team recently released the working draft for the Santa Barbara Bicycle Master Plan for public review, which can be viewed here: The document updates the 1998 Bicycle Master Plan, aiming to improve the cycling experience, recommending bicycle projects and finding ways to finance implementation.

In case you missed our live Twitter feed from the event, Meléndrez attended the annual ULI Transit Oriented Los Angeles today. Panels with a wide range of speaker viewpoints, knowledge and perspectives created a dynamic and insightful event. Ways to revitalize communities through transit, and lessons learned with case study examples provided insight into the benefits of transit-oriented development and design and how to continue to create these opportunities in Los Angeles.

Green TI unanimously (9-0) passed tonight at the Long Beach City Council meeting! The conceptual plan completed by Meléndrez re-visions a one-mile stretch of the Terminal Island (TI) Freeway, a wide and polluted truck-thoroughfare, into a community-serving greenspace.

The Gateway, an 80 unit transitional homeless housing project, recently opened at the Century Villages at Cabrillo (CVC) campus in Long Beach. The opening marks the most recent project Meléndrez has completed on the CVC campus – dating back to the Master Development Plan and Campus Landscape Barrier.

Meléndrez is working on developing a ‘short-and-sweet’ Vision Plan for the 350+ acre Channel Island Park at California State University, Channel Islands (CSUCI). The park is envisioned as an environmental resource, fostering ecological education and research, and providing a passive recreational opportunity for the university and community.

Last night Long Beach Airport Terminal Improvements received an AIA Los Angeles Design Award! The prestigious award marks the fifth award for the iconic project. Meléndrez was the landscape architect on the project, designing open-air garden spaces integral to the airport experience.

In early August, Meléndrez participated in the first 100% solar powered festival on the Eastside at Mariachi Plaza, called Eastside Sol.  Our design team envisioned how solar arrays could be incorporated into Mariachi Plaza for this event that strove to raise awareness about alternative energy options.  The event attracted hundreds of eastside residents.
