Metropolis, one of the largest private development projects in Los Angeles’ history, has opened the first of its four residential towers as well as a marquee new hotel, Hotel Indigo.  RELM designed a signature amenity deck for Tower 1, graphically expressed through 4 over scaled elliptical planting beds, a glass parapet framing views of the 110 freeway, and an infinity edge pool and the complex’s arrival motorcourt.

One of the largest building projects ever undertaken by USC, the new $700-million Village campus houses eight residential colleges, a conference center, a Trader Joes, a mobility hub, and an array of retail shops.  RELM incorporated USC’s ornate Italian brickwork and paving patterns throughout the hardscape, softening the environment with bosques of camphor of trees, a central water feature, and several verdant gathering nodes.  The Village demonstrates USC’s desire to improve the quality of

Culver City is on the make, surpassing its formidable evolution over the past decade.  Seminal projects are coming online including Ivy Station, a 5-acre mixed use project in the heart of downtown.  A linear urban park will connect a new Metro station with the project’s vast offerings—a boutique hotel, mid-rise residential, office, and multiple retail shops to create a mini-village.

RELM designed a 1.5-acre estate landscape for residents of a luxury, Beverly Hills residential high-rise, Ten Thousand Santa Moncia.  The park, sitting atop a large podium, encourages guests to immerse themselves in a Southern California landscape reminiscent of the city’s surrounding estates and social clubs.

Melendrez wins top honors at ASLA’s SoCal Design Awards for Marsh Park, a former glass factory turned park.  A robust yet compact footprint uses native ecology to create a vibrant green space inclusive of an arroyo and river marsh system used to treat urban run off before pollutants enter the river ecology.

One of Los Angeles’ proposed freeway cap parks – Space 134 in Glendale--takes Merit award in planning at ASLA  SoCal’s bi-annual design awards. Located atop SR-134, the park will connect the City’s civic, cultural, retail, and business core with Glendale’s residential neighborhoods currently bisected by the highway. If realized, the cap park will literally unify one of Los Angeles county’s largest cities with its commercial and residential centers.

Streets are no longer just places to move vehicles – they are the future opportunity for the city’s landscape. Jen Packer, Consulting Landscape Architect at Melendrez, will co-present case studies at Green Build’s annual conference here in Los Angeles tomorrow.  On Saturday, she will also lead a site walk of another Melendez project--Marsh Park--a former glass factory that was rehabilitated into a vibrant urban landscape connecting visitors to the LA River and bike trail.

Jennifer Packer joined a fantastic AIA panel to discuss early engagement of Landscape Architects to achieve shared goals. Her talk focused on utilization of onsite recycled water through cisterns, setting expectations of what a drought tolerant/native landscape looks like in the urban context, and definign the role and function of landscape in midrise and tower project as development goes up, not out.

Melendrez was recently selected by Crescent Heights to be the Landscape Architect for a new 77-story residential tower in Chicago, Illinois. Located at the South end of historic Grant Park, Melendrez is collaborating with Rafael Vinoly Architects PC and Rockwell Group on this iconic new highrise around which a series of twelve garden spaces spiral and ascend from the 16th floor up to the 76th!

Construction on Forest City's Blossom Plaza has been completed and it is now open to the public. Built entirely over subterranean parking, Blossom Plaza is a mixed use development comprised of three distinct exterior spaces: the Retail Walk, the Fountain Square, and the Courtyard. The Retail Walk and the Courtyard both draw influence from traditional Shanghai residential alleys or Longtangs.
